La paraula any (cap)
Es col·loca davant dels substantius en plural en frases negatives i interrogatives:- Do you have any children? Tens cap fill?
- I don't have any children - No tinc cap fill
- Have you got any brothers and sisters? Tens cap germans i germanes?
- I haven't got any brothers and sisters - No tinc cap germà ni germana.
La paraula some (una mica de, alguns)
És la paraula equivalent utilitzada en frases afirmatives:- I have some children - Tinc (alguns) fills.
- I've got some brothers and sisters - Tinc (alguns) germans i germanes.
- I have some English books - Tinc (alguns) llibres.
No obstant això, en una conversa normal, les preguntes d'aquest tipus es farien:
- I have two children - Tinc dos fills.
- I've got one brother and two sisters - Tinc un germà i dues germanes.
Per últim, any i some es poden utilitzar indistintament davant de substantius no comptables:
- Perhaps they've got some rock music - Potser tenen alguna cosa de música rock.
- Do you have any rock music? - Tenen alguna cosa de música rock?
De vegades també s'utilitza el som en preguntes en les quals s'esperen respostes afirmatives:
- Could we have some bread, please? Podria portar-nos pa, si us plau?
- Would you like some wine? Li agradaria vi?
